PhotoEast patron and photographer, Eamonn McCabe introduces the PhotoEast 2018 festival curators, Emma Bowkett and Josh Lustig of the Financial Times Weekend Magazine, to discuss the highlights of PhotoEast 2018. Formerly himself picture editor at The Guardian, Eamonn will also talk to Emma and Josh about life behind the scenes on the picture desk of a weekly current affairs magazine.
Emma Bowkett is Director of Photography at the Financial Times FT Weekend Magazine. Joining in 2009, she was integral to the small creative team who reworked the visual language of the magazine ready for the 2010 re-launch. More recently she was Director of Photography on the AW16 issue of PORT, a biannual style magazine.
Emma is a visiting university lecturer, and regularly participates at international portfolio reviews, festivals, art fairs and awards, including Unseen, Foam Paul Huf, and the Carmignac Photojournalism Award. She has been a Master at both Foam and Fabrica Masterclasses and is part of Magnum Photos Professional Practice, which supports young and emerging photographers. Recently she won the inaugural Firecracker Contributors Award, which recognises women who have had a substantial impact on the photography industry and is voted for by professional photographers. This year Emma will curate exhibitions in the UK and Germany.
Josh is the Deputy Picture Editor at the FT Weekend Magazine. He is a regular participant at festivals and workshops, and has been a visiting lecturer at several universities including, London College of Communication, University of Syracuse, NY, USA and the School of Media and Journalism, Aarhus, Denmark.
In 2013 Josh co-founded the book-publishing wing of Tartaruga, an independent record label and print studio. Up until May 2014 when he joined the FT, Josh was the Assignments Editor at Panos Pictures.
